Peter Thibeault: A Flaneur's Bricolage
Collage and Assemblage
$24.75

Purchase Directly from Lulu.com
After working in an Art Library shortly after getting my BFA, I became a lifelong collector of printed ephemera. A short time later, I caught the flea market bug and started accumulating dimensional collectibles as well. When the pandemic hit, I began to seriously use my archives as raw materials for collage as I had been doing with the dimensional assemblage boxes for several years.

I create my work in a state akin to meditation, contemplating the calamity of the human-made environmental and climate crisis. Informed by my scientific background, I create topographies that evoke familiar images that can be thought of on a microscopic or macroscopic scale. Microscopically, the often biomorphic forms I create approximate organism cells, metabolic paths, or intracellular structures I have studied and analyzed in my research days.

The Boston-based artists presented in this exhibition, all poignantly represent a multitude of approaches that are informed by their lived experiences, their formal training as well as a broad range of discourses on how race, gender, social relations, history and culture substantively shape both figurative and abstract art. As such there are no easy answers when it comes to the production, reception and meaning of Black Futures.

These works directly came about from an offer of some cork borers with the question, “Is there anything you can do with these?” As a maker of things, I’ve always been concerned about generating more stuff when so much visual material is already in circulation. This combined with the idea of finding an artwork as opposed to creating it from zero, which is the essence of collage. Many components of these works are, on their own, uninteresting or aesthetically dubious. Repurposing them demonstrates that context may be the key aspect of making. Though there are some obscure visual plays on materials and punning going on, these works are meant to be pure visual indulgences.

A few years ago, I spent some time in Paris. One Sunday morning, I discovered that there was an outdoor flea market on the boulevard where I was staying. As I browsed through the various stalls, I discovered a small piece of African sculpture from Benin which I ended up buying. This piece renewed my interest in power figures and other art forms which enable man to connect with the spiritual world and the symbols embedded in those art forms.

I quit the newscast more times than I can count in this six, seven year deluge of difficult news. How many years? Maybe it is a decade, maybe it has always been. It is time for a retreat to the woods, to the studio, to the ocean – somewhere I am not followed by the latest cacophony of assaults on the land, on the people, on and on and on. In the quiet, my thoughts peek back around the wall of my mind, one, two. - Stacy Thomas-Vickory

This is the work started just prior to lockdown. In that unprecedented moment, new concepts and experimentation started. Simply put, these drawings and lithographs are documenting what is going on in the world. - Len Thomas-Vickory

Catalina Viejo Lopez de Roda: Self Care
$22.00

Purchase Directly from Lulu.com
Dealing with a persistent virus has instigated a new direction in my work, with the central theme being Self Care. A single woman lives in isolation in each of these drawings, paintings and dioramas. She inhabits wild environments and has developed a symbiotic relationship with the landscape. The female figures embody the wild woman archetype and reflect the landscape around them: arms open up like flowers, legs mirror the bends of the river, bodies twists like tree trunks. She is aware that she is a part of the seasons of life; birth, change, decay, regeneration.

: Ok, so there is this story I have told numerous times, Pandemic-related, installing a mailbox down the road for the first time ever for mail delivery in New Hampshire, summer home and summer studio location. Due to the Pandemic, I left Boston. The block of wood I was using to prevent the stake I was trying to drive into the ground from getting mangled, broke up into all these neat little pieces, lines. This was the beginning of my line drawings. Materials.
Jared Abner: Simply put, my work is about subtraction and addition. First, I subtract the raw material by turning, carving, and cutting away at it. Then, I put the pieces together again in a new way. I go through this process of creation through destruction, playing just like a little kid cutting something with a saw.

Rob Roy: Dispatches from America

I make work that responds to images and events that span both American and world history. This way of looking started in my childhood and has continued into the present. I look at my use of subject matter (often current events, war, terrorism, conflict, religion, danger, science, sports, culture, capitalism, and globalization) as an open system, and in constant flux. It is also an opportunity to consider what has been lost, and what continues to resonate. It is also an opportunity to evaluate the relevance of what endures.

Though I work mostly alone, I am always making a space for someone else to occupy, if only temporarily. I use patterns for the visual interest and rhythms they build, but also the motion that results as I warp and torque them on a flat surface. Wallpaper patterns take that space home to domestic walls and the confinement we all experienced during a worldwide quarantine.

Jo Ann Rothschild: Hope for the Future
$15.00

Purchase Directly from Lulu.com
Jo Ann Rothschild writes, 2020 was a funny year for everyone, easier in some ways for non-teaching artists, because we spend most of our working time alone. Nonetheless, it just sucked. I had a number of projects and I’m showing [some of] them at HallSpace. It’s tough because the work is diverse, there is a lot of it, and I often wish to narrow what I do, to one thing. But I find everything influences and hopefully, nourishes everything else.

And Hazard makes sculpted landscape paintings that project out from the wall, like open dioramas.

The COVID-19 global pandemic is spread through droplets. Think of each page, each book, as a droplet, a container of ideas, filled with annotations, drawn, or otherwise. No page is off limits. This is the seventh iteration of the HallSpace Drawing Project. Entry to the exhibition is open to everyone. A catalog of all works in the exhibition will be produced and available on the gallery website. Over time this project has become a fundraiser for the gallery. But the intention of the Drawing Project continues to be an opportunity for everyone to participate. And perhaps, in some small way expand awareness, and support for the arts.

John Schulz writes, “In the end, I want my work to have a presence like furniture to which other meanings might be attached, to force the hand of chance and make something beautiful from the cast-off and insignificant, like the rubber gloves and artichokes in the paintings of deChirico. A critic once described my work as “essentially leaden and humorless.” I found that to be a rather sensitive observation and took it as a compliment.”

William Flynn: Relevant Once, Now Raw Material
$12.50

Purchase Directly from Lulu.com
Work, relevant at the time and saved for years, now becomes raw material for experimentation and discovery. It began while editing, sifting through hundreds of paintings and drawings on paper. What to keep and what to toss? Tearing many in half and throwing them on the floor. Then at some point, realizing parts magically came together creating a new and odd visual experience. I started lining the irregular halves down the hall, composing larger animated drawings.
