Rocks and Rivers
I love to paint water – its movement and layers, its chaos, and ultimately its comfort. My first show at HallSpace, Neponset, came out of years of sketching the Neponset River. In those waters I saw a life force, but I also eventually saw extensive pollution, and learned about violence to the indigenous communities that depended on the river.
Since then I’ve become drawn to the rocks and streams of the Blue Hills. The streams seem to shape the stones, and allow them to flow. The rocks, unmoving and secure in the Earth, seem to ground and heal the water as it passes over. Feeling the balance and tension between rock and stream gave me a new orientation within the paintings. It feels long-lasting, and connected to the spiritual.
Over the last 3 years I have made many studies of the Blue Hills, spending hours taking in rock formations, streams, and a vernal pool. I refer to these studies as I layer thin washes of oil colors on large canvases laid flat on the studio floor, and slowly, I build compositions of rocks and moving water. I look for resonance between the two.
