Neponset River
April 2022
I studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 80’s, then moved to New Mexico for several years, painting, teaching art, and working at Shidoni Foundry. At the time I also did a 9 month painting residency at the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada. I then moved to New York for 7 years, painting, teaching and exhibiting in group shows.
After marrying Fleeka in 1996 we settled in the Boston area to raise 2 boys in Milton. Teaching art at the charter school nearby (Boston Collegiate), I also painted at a studio in Fort Point, and currently in a studio the South End.
I draw and paint sketches outdoors in the city, on the Neponset River, and in different places up and down the East coast. These studies inspire ideas for the large studio paintings. Themes emerge from the sketches, as it did for the Neponset River series. I’ve now spent eight years on this series, studying not only how it looks and moves, but learning the history of communities that have thrived and declined around it.
