Artists: That’s Cliché, or Not
• • •
To interpret the title of this this year's Drawing Project, please read about the origins of the word "cliché." The phrase, "everything has been done," typically defines cliché. Is it possible to find meaning, or open an awareness to something through the use of a stereotype? Maybe discover the beauty in a drawing of a "Seagull on a Post," or something typically referred to as cliché. This drawing exhibition seeks to debunk cliché as a form of criticism meant to diminish the value of one's work.

cliche (n.)
1825, electrotype, stereotype, from French cliché, a technical word in printer’s jargon for “stereotype block,” noun use of past participle of clicher “to click” (18c.), supposedly echoic of the sound of a mold striking metal.
Figurative extension to trite phrase, worn-out expression is first attested 1888, via the notion of the metal plate from which a print or design could be reproduced endlessly without variety, paralleling the sense evolution of stereotype. But this sense was not common in English until the 1920s, when it was identified as a French idiom.

That Face #1, 2019
35mm film print, xeroxed text, pencil,

Does familiarity with images breed
cliché? That's the question I ask
about That Face of Anne Frank,
one that's always represented the
power of art to extract meaning out
of existence, as she did in her
writing. But when a parody of her
appeared this spring in the Harvard
Lampoon, I felt alarm for her loss,
and ours.

How to Draw a Heart
The arteries of the turbines as seen
from the train are actively compressing
god knows what as we shuttle
past Deer Park Station.
I think I read it was jest fuel to fuel
jet engines, and jet engine components,
all produced here, parts as small
as the smallest rotors for dental drills
to full scale motor armatures like those
of the heart, which is as close to a turbine
as anything else in the body.
I guess the stomach, too, is a turbine
but I don't see the stomach illustrated
on any Hallmark cards, no doily-
accompanied tubes to say I love you
though the stomach is really
the first to know if something's up
before the heart kicks in, the engines
to the intimate holding infinitely complex
hinges that swing with desire.
We keep trying to illustrate desire
as if desire were something
one could draw as an expression
of l’ve, something possible to construct.
